The first post and why I decided to make a blog.

My first exposure to programming occurred in a somewhat roundabout way when I was a child some time in the 90s or 00s. I don’t know how most people learn how a computer program comes into existence, but the concept was first introduced to me through the dancing fingers of Jonny Lee Miller in the movie “Hackers”. It has been years, maybe even north of a decade, since I’ve seen the movie and I don’t much remember much of the action. What I do remember is the ridiculously awesome nicknames like “Zero Cool”, “Acid Burn” and “Crash Override”, the see-through computer that was better than a regular computer because it was see-through and the fact that if you knew coding, you could make a computer do just about anything. Even make a huge tanker ship do a barrel roll… some… somehow.

From that initial encounter with the concept it took me years and years to realize that I could learn this magical and mystical skill named “coding”. Unfortunately as a kid I was too easily distracted and lacked the drive to sit down and actually learn anything, so besides a brief foray into python in my early teens the skill remained unattainable.

It took becoming an adult, understanding what hard work is, what the fundamentals of learning are and the knowledge that I have limitless possibility as long as I dedicate time and energy into something, for me to finally sit down and learn to code. Since that realization its been some three years now from when I first started to learn about variables, methods and classes. While I haven’t been able to dedicate all my time and attention to the art, coding has become a reservoir of happiness and pleasure to me. I seriously enjoy the possibility to look at lines of code and crack the… well… “code” behind them. It’s an ever growing puzzle of complexity to me and I’m enjoying the journey from total scrub to something more than a total scrub.

As I’ve become proficient enough to start writing simple programs I’ve decided I want to make something I’ve been dreaming of making since I was a child. My very own video game. Through some twists and turns of fate I’ve decided to create space explorer/ simulator akin to the Escape Velocity Trilogy. In order to document the journey from an empty Unity project to whatever I manage to create before I drop or release the project I want to be able to document the experience. Hence this blog. I hope to write mostly updates on what happens and my thoughts as I try to learn C# and Unity in order to create a little bit of nostalgia in a newer and less professional packaging. Any input and feedback is incredibly welcome.

I hope you enjoy the content.
